The Paris Agreement and COP25: Understanding the Significance
The Paris Agreement, signed in 2015, is a historic milestone in the fight against climate change. It is an international agreement between 197 countries, including the United States, that aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The agreement sets out a framework for countries to work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase renewable energy, and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Each country is expected to develop and communicate their own national climate action plans, called nationally determined contributions (NDCs), every five years.
The next COP (Conference of the Parties) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is COP25, which will take place in November 2019 in Santiago, Chile. COP is an annual conference where countries come together to discuss progress on climate change and negotiate international agreements.
The significance of COP25 lies in the fact that it is the first COP since the Paris Agreement was signed. Countries will discuss progress on implementing the Paris Agreement and negotiate the final rules and guidelines for its implementation. This includes deciding how to measure, report and verify emissions reductions and how to provide financial support to developing countries to tackle climate change.
With the United States announcing its intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, other countries are taking on a leadership role in climate action. China, the world`s biggest carbon emitter, has pledged to reach peak emissions by 2030 and to increase the share of non-fossil fuels in its primary energy consumption to around 20% by 2030. The European Union aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% below 1990 levels by 2030 and has set a target of at least 32% renewable energy by 2030.
The Paris Agreement represents a turning point in global efforts to tackle climate change. However, in order to achieve its goals, it is essential that countries take urgent and ambitious action. COP25 provides an opportunity for countries to come together to strengthen their commitment to the Paris Agreement and to take the necessary steps towards a sustainable future for all.
